W.H.O. proposes tax on sugary drinks
Killian Perreault
Obesity is a major problem in the united states and has been rising constantly for years, and these numbers will continue to rise unless we do something about it. Thankfully the World Health Organization has solution, they proposed a tax on all unhealthy or sugary drinks. This tax could help slow the consumption of these unhealthy beverages and also help the economy. Sugar is not a needed nutrient in the human body and should be kept below 10 percent of intake. Who says that the only items being taxed will be ones in which there are healthier alternatives.
This tax may upset some people who drink or eat these products daily but its for the best. The rate of consumption of these unhealthy goods is alarming, a poll by the Yale University Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity revealed that almost half of americans drink soda on a daily basis and half of them. Soda is the largest source of sugar in children and teens and high sugar intake is linked with health concerns such as metabolic syndrome and type two diabetes. The high fructose corn syrup found in many sodas is used a sweetener but has been associated to high body fat. This survey was conducted with 1000 adults over the phone. This tax could also help the economy by cutting health care costs and increases the revenue so there is more money to invest on health services.
A study showed how much of what liquids are consumed by adults in a year and the results showed that the most consumed drink by adults in a year is soda. The average person consumes 44.7 gallons of pop a year. This much soda is equal to 375 pounds and that is the average amount consumed a year. The other leaders in the study were beer and bottled water.
This tax has already been put into effect in Berkeley California, in 2014. This proved that this tax would work and cut consumption, a study showed that the intake of sugary drinks was down by %20 and the intake of water was raised too. This tax would make obesity rates go down even if it is just a small difference if the tax was put into effect nation wide.

Mediterranean Tragedy
Trevor Nichols
9/28/16
The Mediterranean Sea now has more than one-hundred and sixty more souls in its waters. Hundreds of migrants drowned off the coast of Egypt earlier this week when their boat capsized. The migrants were sailing from Egypt to escape to Italy when the boat they were travelling on capsized twelve nautical miles off the coast of Egypt. There have been at least one-hundred and sixty casualties already.
About four-hundred and fifty people were aboard the boat aimed towards Europe when it was overturned around twelve nautical miles away from the Egyptian city of Rosetta. Four men including the owner of the ship have been arrested in connection with the smuggling operation. A local fisherman was quoted as screaming into his mobile phone "the sea is littered with bodies." Although the death toll continues to rise Egyptian officials report that more than one-hundred sixty people have been rescued from the water. Local fisherman have been playing a vital role in recovering bodies and although there were many survivors, the only thing coming out of the sea now is more bodies.
